Choosing a funeral director

How to compare funeral directors, use the price information they must publish and ask useful questions before agreeing to anything.

You do not have to choose the first funeral director you speak to. Price, service, ownership, location, availability and the way you are treated can all matter.

Start with the Standardised Price List

All funeral directors covered by the CMA's Funerals Market Investigation Order must display a Standardised Price List and other specified information. Their website should make the information clear and easy to find.

Useful questions to ask

  • What is included in the attended or unattended funeral price?
  • Which costs are paid to third parties?
  • What deposit is required and when is payment due?
  • Can I remove services I do not want?
  • Which crematorium or cemetery would be used?
  • Who owns the funeral director and are there relevant business interests I should know about?
  • Who will be my main contact?

Look beyond the headline price

Two funeral directors may structure optional services differently. Compare the total package you actually want, not just one headline figure.
