Funeral options
Understand the main differences between burial, attended cremation and direct cremation before deciding what feels right.
Burial
A burial usually involves a ceremony followed by burial in a cemetery, churchyard or another permitted burial place. Costs can include the funeral director, coffin, burial plot or grave fees and memorial costs.
Attended cremation
An attended cremation includes a service that mourners can attend. The service may be religious, non religious, humanist, traditional, informal or highly personal.
Direct cremation
A direct cremation is an unattended cremation. There is no service with mourners at the crematorium itself. Families can still hold a memorial, celebration or gathering separately.
There is no single correct choice
Cost, beliefs, family traditions, environmental priorities and how much ceremony you want can all matter. You can also leave the decision open in your funeral wishes if you are not sure.
