Paying for a funeral
Understand the main ways a funeral may be paid for and what information is useful to leave for the people arranging it.
Funeral costs may be met from the estate, savings, an existing prepaid funeral plan, an insurance policy or by family members. The right route depends on the circumstances.
For your own planning
You can record the type of arrangement that exists without putting account numbers, passwords or policy details into your funeral wishes document. Instead, note where the relevant paperwork is kept.
If someone has died
Ask the funeral director when payment is due and whether a deposit is required. The estate may ultimately bear funeral costs, but access to estate funds can take time. Banks may sometimes pay funeral invoices directly from the deceased person's account subject to their process.
